Know Your Rights
Your rights are not optional. They are protected.
As a member of the American Postal Workers Union, your rights are defined and protected by two core documents:
Understanding both ensures you are informed, protected, and empowered in your workplace and within your union.
Your Rights as a Union Member (Constitution & Bylaws)
The Constitution and Bylaws govern how the union operates and how members are treated within the organization.
1. Right to Equal Treatment
Every member has the right to be treated fairly and without discrimination within the union.
No member should be denied representation, participation, or opportunity based on personal differences or opinions.
2. Right to Participate
You have the right to:
-
Attend union meetings
-
Vote on union matters
-
Run for union office (if eligible)
-
Participate in union activities
This is your union. Your voice matters.
3. Right to Freedom of Speech Within the Union
Members have the right to express views, opinions, and concerns regarding union matters.
Respectful disagreement is allowed. Retaliation is not.
4. Right to Transparency and Accountability
You have the right to:
-
Review financial reports
-
Understand how union funds are used
-
Expect responsible leadership and governance
Leadership serves the membership. Not the other way around.
5. Right to Due Process
If charges are brought against a member, the Constitution guarantees:
-
Written notice of charges
-
A fair hearing
-
The opportunity to defend yourself
No decisions should be made without process and fairness.
