HOW TO FILE APWU GRIEVANCES
Protecting your rights starts with knowing the process.
APWU stewards serve as union representatives who guide members through the grievance process under Article 15 of the APWU–USPS Collective Bargaining Agreement.
This process is designed to resolve disputes related to wages, hours, and working conditions.
THE FOUR-STEP GRIEVANCE PROCESS
STEP 1: SUPERVISOR DISCUSSION
The grievance begins when the employee discusses the issue with their immediate supervisor.
If the issue is not resolved, the grievance moves to Step 2.
STEP 2: FORMAL UNION APPEAL
A union representative meets with a USPS official to review the grievance and seek resolution.
If no agreement is reached, the grievance advances to Step 3.
STEP 3: NATIONAL LEVEL REVIEW
An APWU national representative meets with an Area USPS official to attempt resolution.
If unresolved, the grievance proceeds to arbitration.
STEP 4: BINDING ARBITRATION
The APWU and USPS jointly select a neutral arbitrator.
The arbitrator reviews the case and issues a decision that is final and binding.
TIMELINES MATTER
A grievance must be initiated within 14 days of when the employee or union became aware, or should have become aware, of the issue.
Failure to meet this deadline may result in the grievance being denied.
